Approach Coffee 프로젝트는 영국식 브런치 카페의 정체성을 서울의 도시적 맥락 안에서 어떻게 번역할 수 있을지에 대한 고민에서 시작되었다. 초기에는 첼시 플라워쇼, 코티지 가든 등 전통적인 영국정원의 이미지들을 중심으로 리서치를 진행했지만, 이러한 요소들이 오늘날 영국의 도시적 풍경을 대표한다고 볼 수 있는가에 대한 질문이 생겼다. 이에 과거 런던 방문 과정에서 기록했던 사진과 도시의 장면들을 다시 분석하기 시작했고, 우리가 일반적으로 떠올리는 영국정원의 이미지는 대부분 지방의 전통 정원이나 전원적 풍경에 가까우며, 실제 런던 도심의 분위기와는 차이가 있다는 점을 발견했다. 프로젝트의 대상지가 서울 용산이라는 고밀도의 도시 환경에 위치한다는 점에서, 설계는 전원적 영국정원을 재현하기보다 런던 도심의 풍경과 분위기를 공간 안에 번역하는 방향으로 전개되었다. 그 과정에서 런던의 거리와 건축에서 반복적으로 발견되는 요소들을 추출했고, 가장 인상적으로 드러난 공통점은 블랙 컬러를 중심으로 형성되는 도시 환경의 질서였다. 특히 오래된 석조 건축과 포장으로 이루어진 구도심 속에서도 간판, 표지판, 펜스, 조명 등 다양한 도시 시설물들이 블랙 컬러로 정리되어 있었으며, 이는 역사적 건축의 질감을 해치지 않으면서도 도시 전체의 분위기를 정돈하는 요소로 작동하고 있었다. 설계는 이러한 도시적 언어를 공간의 주요 재료와 컬러 시스템으로 가져오고자 했다. 블랙 컬러의 구조물과 시설물은 공간의 기본적인 질서를 형성하고, 그 위에 식재의 녹색이 대비되며 공간에 생기를 더하는 방식이다. 결과적으로 이 프로젝트는 전통적인 영국정원의 형식을 직접 재현하기보다, 런던 도심에서 느껴지는 색채와 재료, 도시적 분위기를 현대적으로 재구성함으로써, 서울이라는 도시 안에서 새로운 영국식 브런치 카페의 풍경을 제안한다.

The Approach Coffee project began with a question of how the identity of a British-style brunch café could be translated within the urban context of Seoul. Early research focused on images commonly associated with traditional English gardens, such as the Chelsea Flower Show and cottage gardens. However, this led to a fundamental question: do these landscapes truly represent the contemporary urban character of England today? Revisiting photographs and observations recorded during visits to London, it became clear that the images we typically associate with “English gardens” are often rooted in historic estates or rural countryside settings, and differ significantly from the atmosphere of central London. Given that the project is located in Yongsan, one of Seoul’s dense urban districts, the design shifted away from reproducing a pastoral English garden and instead sought to reinterpret the landscape and atmosphere of London’s urban environment within the space. Through this process, recurring elements found throughout London’s streets and architecture were carefully extracted, with the most distinctive commonality being the urban order formed around the use of black. Even within historic districts composed of aged stone architecture and paving, urban elements such as signage, fences, lighting, and street fixtures were consistently unified in black. Rather than competing with the historic fabric, these black elements functioned as a subtle framework that organized and clarified the atmosphere of the city. The design sought to translate this urban language into the project’s primary material and color system. Black structures and site elements establish the spatial order of the landscape, while the green planting contrasts against them, introducing vitality and softness into the space. Ultimately, rather than directly reproducing the form of a traditional English garden, the project reinterprets the colors, materials, and urban atmosphere of London in a contemporary way, proposing a new landscape for a British-style brunch café within the city of Seoul.
