Wall, the Vertical Boundaries

As the ground shifts in elevation and different territories meet, vertical boundaries emerge. We commonly call them walls. A wall is perhaps the clearest line separating inside from outside, yet in a garden, it is more than simply a barrier. On sloping ground, a wall holds back changes in elevation and creates small pockets of earth where plants can take root. Near architecture, it controls views and privacy, sometimes receding behind vegetation to become a quiet backdrop for the garden. A single wall can support the ground, define space, and become a vessel for planting. What matters is not so much the height of the wall, but the relationship between what lies in front of it and what lies beyond. How much should be concealed, where should the view be opened, how much should plants be allowed to cover the wall, and how quietly should it fade into the garden over time? Rather than asserting its own presence, a wall gently connects different levels and spaces.

Outside of the Architecture

The architectural lines are extended into the site, dividing the landscape into private and communal areas. These two realms are defined not simply by ownership or access, but by the relationship between life inside the house and the outdoor spaces beyond. The private areas, 1, 2, and 3, wrap around the rear of the house and connect directly to the adjoining interior spaces. Views and everyday activities extend naturally from inside into the garden, creating outdoor spaces that remain closely tied to private life. Just as each room has its own character, each garden takes on a different atmosphere and use according to the interior space it adjoins. In contrast, the communal areas, A, B, C, and D, are places for arrival, gathering, and spending time together. A and B form the transition from the parking area to the garden entrance, shaping the experience of arrival and the first impression of the garden. C and D are shared outdoor spaces closest to the house, where people can gather for a meal, sit, rest, and spend time together. The landscape, therefore, is not simply divided into Private / Community zones. Instead, it creates a sequence of spatial relationships—arriving, entering, gathering, lingering, and eventually transitioning into the private gardens. The space outside the architecture is not simply what remains after the building ends. It is another living space, where the order of the architecture extends into the site and everyday life continues into the garden.

Inside of the Architecture, and the ‘Gaze’

The character of each garden was shaped by the interior space and the views from within. Gardens viewed from private spaces, such as bedrooms, were designed with a restrained palette and subtle seasonal changes, creating a calm and contemplative landscape—a quiet backdrop to everyday life. In contrast, the gardens viewed from shared spaces, such as the living and dining areas, were designed with a greater variety of plants and changing scenery, creating a more dynamic and lively landscape.
