돈암장의 옆집, 화연재

서울 혜화문 밖 동소문동에 돈암장(敦岩莊)이 있다. 이 곳은 조선시대 동활인서(東活人署)라는 의료기관이 있던 자리이었고, 1938년경 구한말 내시였던 송성진이 궁궐목수 배희한에게 의뢰하여 돈암장(敦岩莊)을 짓게 되었다. 돈암장은 한옥으로 된 본채와 청기와 양옥 등이 있었고 부속동을 포함하여 9개의 건축물로 구성되어 있었다. 청기와 양옥 앞 정원에는 천연의 거대한 바위(敦岩)가 있었고, 이 바위에 의하여 돈암장의 이름이 생겨나고, 돈암동의 유래가 되었다. 해방 후 이승만 박사가 귀국하여 2년여 기간 동안 머물렀다는 점에서 근대역사속의 장소이기도 하다. 그 후, 돈암장은 1970년대 대지 분할을 하게 되고, 돈암장 한옥본채 옆 청기와양옥이 있던 자리는 새로운 주인을 맞이하게 된다. 청기와 양옥자리를 분양받은 건축주 가족은 그 시절부터 지금까지 이곳을 떠나지 않고 살아오고 있다. 그 사이 주택이 두 번 새로이 지어졌고, 기존 주택의 여러 문제로 인하여, 건축주는 2022년 같은 장소에서 살아갈 새로운 집을 짓기로 결심한다.

Hwayeonjae, the Neighboring House of Donamjang

In Dongsomun-dong, just outside Hyehwamun in Seoul, stands Donamjang. This site was once home to Donghwarinseo, a medical facility from the Joseon Dynasty. Around 1938, Song Seong-jin, a eunuch from the late Korean Empire, commissioned the royal carpenter Bae Hui-han to construct Donamjang. The estate consisted of a traditional Korean hanok main house, a Western-style building with blue roof tiles, and a total of nine structures including auxiliary buildings. In the garden in front of the blue-roofed house stood a massive natural rock (敦岩), from which Donamjang derived its name, and which also gave rise to the name of the surrounding neighborhood, Donam-dong. After Korea’s liberation, Syngman Rhee stayed here for about two years, further embedding the site in modern Korean history. In the 1970s, the Donamjang estate was subdivided, and the site where the blue-roofed Western-style house once stood, next to the hanok main house, came under new ownership. The family who acquired this parcel has lived there continuously since that time. Over the years, the house was rebuilt twice, and due to various issues with the existing structure, the client ultimately decided in 2022 to construct a new home on the same site—one that would support their life there into the future.
